Toronto, Ontario. March 1, 2010 (FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE): Green Cricket is pleased to announce the appointment of Petra Hygienic Systems as its exclusive distributor in North America of its naturally formulated, environmentally friendly personal care amenities. Effective March 1, 2010, Petra will be the sole distributor for Green Cricket’s products for use in health clubs, gyms, golf courses, community centres, and targeted sectors where Petra currently provides its amenities.

Green Cricket is an online retailer of environmentally friendly products.  The company launched in 2008 with a vision of making a broad range of quality green products easily available to consumers and business through its website www.greencricket.ca. In addition to sourcing over 500 environmentally friendly products, Green Cricket developed and launched its own lineup of naturally formulated personal care products (namely shampoo, conditioner, body wash, body lotion, and foaming hand wash) for consumer sale in 2008, and later released a bulk product, without fragrance, for use in health clubs and other commercial establishments.

Petra is the leading supplier of Club amenities in North America, and brings its sales team and 22 years of experience to the partnership. Petra is committed to the provision of products that are better for the environment, and servicing all clients’ needs to provide superior service and quality products.

Holiday News 2009

December 20th, 2009

We have now moved into our new warehouse home in Etobicoke with our partners, Green Earth Organics, and together we are dreaming up ways to bring a complete natural and organic lifestyle (GreenEarth with organic food, and GreenCricket with home and lifestyle products) right to your door. Just in time for the holidays!

We have created a unique lineup of GreenGift baskets that are both stylish… but also focus on eliminating waste by offering reusable containers, and minimizing the stuffing. After all, don’t we all know that baskets are stuffed because that makes you THINK you’re getting more? Why not just get more for what you pay for.

Also - this holiday we are offering FREE gift wrapping on gift items that you buy. We will use brown kraft paper, and a nice colorful ribbon (recycled paper or organic cotton)… just tell us you need it wrapped in your instruction box!

Happiness and Good Health to all of you for the Holidays and New Year!

Give Green to Charity!

Instead of buying green gifts for just family and friends, have you thought about donating those gifts to your favourite charity?

We recently received a large order from a customer who expressly wanted all of the product to be delivered to some of the needy charities in Toronto. This meant a gift of personal care products, and baby products to the young mothers and kids at Covenant House in Toronto, and a pallet full of paper products and household products to Women’s Habitat, a shelter in Etobicoke that assists women who are dealing with violence and abuse.
Covenant House
What a wonderful way to make a difference to the environment and the lives of those people depending on those Charities. Thank you to the Mather family! You have set a great example for all of us.

Healthy Season Greetings!

Organic Food for Thought

Something about the start of cooler weather, and the leaves falling, gets me thinking about food, and cooking. OK, that’s not the only time (I can hear you thinking), but it is the beginning of the many feasts that our families will share together as we prepare for Jewish holidays, Canadian and American Thanksgiving, and before you know it’s Christmas!!

It was the perfect time to start trying the wonderful organic food selections that our new partners, GreenEarth Organics are putting into their food bins for delivery. I was delighted to get my first bin filled with fresh fruit and vegetables that I had never seen before! Small pears packed with flavour, slender long carrots, dark blue grapes from turkey1Niagara, brussels sprouts so fresh they were still on the stalk! I took this as my personal challenge to start finding recipes that would match all the great things that came in my box! My order for an Organic Turkey, which will also show up on my doorstep right before he (or she) needs to go into the oven.

For the month of October, we are thrilled to be able to offer you a FREE $37.00 order of fresh local and organic fruits and vegetables from GreenEarth Organics when you spend more than $100.00 on our GreenCricket website at www.greencricket.ca! Enter the code GREENEARTH on checkout, and let the eating begin!

Thank you, and Happy Thanksgiving.

Customer Profile – EAGLES NEST GOLF CLUB

Eagles NestGoing Green on the Links

By: Dan Levine

One of Ontario’s finest golf courses, Eagles Nest Golf Club has done exceptionally well since opening in May 2004. Since then, the accolades have piled up, including top spot on Score Golf Magazine’s recent list of the GTA’s best public courses.

Instead of resting on their laurels, Eagles Nest made a strong commitment to going green. For five years, ownership has worked to create an eco-friendly environment, beginning long before Ontario’s pesticide ban forced other courses to play catch-up.

“We’re well ahead of the competition,” says Steve Marshall, who oversees Sales and Marketing. “We did it before it was the thing to do.”

As part of their ongoing commitment, Eagles Nest recently teamed up with Green Cricket (www.greencricket.ca) to make the facility more eco-friendly. That partnership began when Green Cricket founder Susan Mey met with club ownership and suggested a variety of products for the clubhouse, restaurant, locker rooms and bathrooms.

“It was a no-brainer,” says Marshall, of the decision.
m
The green lifestyle store now supplies Eagles Nest with cleaning products and personal care amenities that can be found in the locker rooms. These naturally formulated products are biodegradable and made from ingredients like shea butter and aloe vera. The pro shop is also stocked with paraben-free sunscreen and non-deet bug spray.

“Everything is much less toxic now, and that’s fantastic,” says Marshall.

m-11While the partnership with Green Cricket began this season, Eagles Nest was already a leader in creating an eco-friendly space. The club has long cut back on pesticide use and worked hard to find the proper, environmentally-safe chemicals.

“Our membership group understood that it would impact the course,” says Marshall, of the fescue and weeds that grew in. “Now, it looks just as great as year-one.”

Having received plenty of praise for the course’s quality, Eagles Nest can also claim to be a leader when it comes to going green.

Giving Kids a Healthy Start

By: Dan Levine

Two years ago, Bernadette Testani and Linda Cunninham each had young children in daycare. The women were members of the board, but found their situation less than ideal.

“We weren’t thrilled with the level of care available in the neighborhood,” says Testani of the traditional options.

Instead of sticking with the status quo, the pair created Green Apple Kids, Toronto’s largest eco-sensitive daycare. The centre introduces a green lifestyle to children aged 1-6, serving organic foods while providing them with a safe and clean space for fun and games.

Many of the products found at Green Apple Kids are purchased from Green Cricket (www.greencricket.ca), as the two organizations have formed a partnership based on shared values.

“We have the same philosophy in what we’re trying to do,” says Testani. “We both want to green the world up and use products that are eco-friendly.”

At first, finding these products had presented a challenge for Testani.

“It was difficult to find suppliers,” she says.” There are plenty of options, but many are less eco-friendly than they appear. Something might be organic, but if it’s made in China, the shipping makes it less environmentally-safe.”

Faced with this problem, Testani turned to Green Cricket, which uses a strict rating system to determine which products are actually green. This rigorous process means that Testani can focus her energy on other tasks, while ordering from Green Cricket with full confidence. Adding even more convenience is Green Cricket’s free delivery, which transports the products in natural gas vehicles.

Among the items delivered are diapers, baby wipes, paper products, sunscreen, hand wash, recycled garbage bags, laundry detergent and plant food. Each meets Green Cricket’s criteria, which considers ingredients, packaging, process, certification and distance to market.

Sometimes, innovative solutions are needed to solve everyday problems, such as the disposal of countless dirty diapers.dogbag

“We were using regular plastic bags,” says Testani, “and we needed a green bag that would break down but stop the smell.”

After some creative thinking, Green Cricket suggested using their biodegradable doggy bags, which has worked well ever since.

“Economically, it makes sense,” says Testani. “They are easy to use and better for the environment.”

She expects Green Apple Kids to fill all 100 spots by January, when a French Immersion program will be introduced. Much of the success is due to in part to their relationships with businesses like Green Cricket.

“I think we’re setting a new standard,” says Testani. “We’re very unique.”

We love that! s2The large interior space contains a smaller zipped pocket. Green Cricket's Backpack Kit

Everything But The Backpack

It’s the same  story every year. One minute you’re at the cottage, soaking up the sun, and the next, the first flyer arrives in your newspaper: BACK TO SCHOOL. It seems easy enough: load up on the essentials, but everyone has an opinion: Moms want ease and affordability, and kids want something cool. Now, there’s even the environmental impact to consider. What do you do? Green Cricket’s staff has been hard at work developing kits to send your kids back to school easily. Everything in our kits are rated highly using our green criteria, and are affordable, and fun. Our kits come in two sizes. For the kid who needs the essentials, there’s the Head of the Class kit ($33.99) For the budding artist, or the kid who needs a little bit more, there’s the Everything But the Backpack kit ($65.99.) All of our school supplies are road tested by real moms and kids, and are an instant way to equip your kids to get back to school.

Green Crickets Nina Bag

Green Cricket's Nina Bag

Every summer it’s the same story: you have a full schedule, events back to back, and you need to transport your sunscreen, sunglasses, engagement gifts, phone, blackberry and everything else that powers your life. There is another concern, though: how to you take that much gear with you whilst remaining stylish at the same time?

Enter the Nina bag, a new addition to the Green Cricket store. I’m going to be honest. I hadn’t seen it in person until our brilliant EA Jennifer was sporting it and I asked her where she got it.

Confusion aside, this bag is insanely cute, has ample “pocketry” (a term coined by myself and a pocket-obsessed friend to describe a suitable distribution of interior pockets for phones and such) and it carries everything you need.

As part of our rigourous mom testing, we noticed that this bag is also perfect to carry diapers, powder, wipes and cream. You can take it to the beach, too. It holds flip flops, bikinis, sunglasses, sunscreen, a water bottle, and 1 or 2 trashy novels.

See for yourself. The Nina Bag is so versatile, you will use it all summer and well into fall.

Coffee Lovers Rejoice! What’s New In Store

June 23rd, 2009

Like most companies, ours runs on a steady  stream of caffeine. I had a reusable cup which I have been using for years but I always found it to be bulky, unstylish and hard to clean.

I stumbled upon the “I Am Not A Paper Cup” on a trip to the United States about 6 months ago and fell in love. To me (and the rest of us in the Cricket offices) the I Am Not A Paper Cup is the perfect marriage of form and function. I always remember to take it with me because I love the look and feel of it so much (it’s the same size as a “tall” at your local ubiquitous coffee chain). When we first sourced this product we had to bulk up our order because everyone in the office wanted to buy one.

We’re proud to be carrying the I Am Not a Paper Cup. They’re only $19.99. Buy one for you and your fellow coffee lovers.
